Important Dates for Taxes

There are several important dates for taxes that you don’t want to miss in 2009. On January 15, if you are not paying your income tax through withholding, you want to make your fourth payment of your 2008 estimated tax. If you file your 2008 tax return and pay all taxes due by February 2nd, the fourth payment is not necessary. On February 2nd, W-2s are also due from your employer and payers of interest must submit 1099’s.

On February 17th, if you have been exempt from income tax withholding for 2008, a new W-4 form must be filed if you want to continue exemption for the next tax year. On April 15th, all tax returns are due. You can also submit Form 4868, which if postmarked on or before April 15th, will give you a six-month extension to file your tax return—making your new deadline October 15th.

If you are a United States Citizen or a resident alien living and working outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico, including serving in the military, file your Form 1040 and pay any tax, interest, and penalties due. You can apply for an extension by filing a Form 4868, giving you a four month extension.

October 1st is the last day for establishing a Simple IRA, and October 15th is the due date to file your tax return if you filed for an extension, and pay any tax, interest, and penalties due. We are all very busy and get caught up in the day-to-day, but make sure you mark these important dates for taxes on your calendar.
