Filing After April 15thSo you missed the April 15th deadline. Congrats. You have probably realized the world isn’t coming to an end six days after the fact. There is life post mortem. It’s too late to request an extension of time to file, so the important thing is to file your return as soon as possible. Why? If you owe, you are going to be hit with interest and penalties. So the sooner you file the better. An e-file is probably your best bet. If you are getting a refund back, chances are you are not going to lose it. You may not be hit with late fees either. But it needs to be claimed within three years time or you may as well bid it goodbye. But, if you live in one of the following counties, your tax deadline of April 15 has been extended to May 11:
Massachusetts has also extended the state income tax return filing deadline to May 11 for residents of the counties listed above. Rhode Island has extended the state income tax return filing deadline to May 11 for all state residents. The IRS will not accept any more electronic submissions after Oct 20, 2010. So make sure you efile as soon as possible. If you are behind on your taxes click here. |
